Letters / Time for stricter regulations

Drew Ratter’s enthusiasm for cruise liners at Collafirth is very valid re bringing business to the area.

Hopes that smaller cruise ships could visit Northmavine

However, proponents of the scheme need to be very cognisant of the significant environment problems cruise ships bring, as evidenced by restrictions now being placed on their presence and their banning from many ports and areas of SSI [site of special scientific interest] worldwide.

Unfortunately, this has not happened in Scotland or Shetland yet but it needs to, particularly for pristine areas such as here promoting fresh air and water.

With the profusion in large vessels now, owners are becoming desperate to find gullible ports to accept their ships, as the downside to their presence is becoming increasingly recognised.

SIC needs to act now to regulate.
