Letters / Why is this allowed?

I had reason to be at the Co-op at lunchtime on Monday 14th November, and on my way back to my work came upon the roundabout which was jammed with cars even though the lights were on green. The reason?

School kids were running across the road to the Co-op, dodging between the cars, some kids were using the crossing, but most were just running between the cars to get to the supermarket. There must have been a hundred or more (Tesco a similar situation).

This obviously was very dangerous, and begs the question why is this allowed? I would have thought that the duty of care that the school has towards these kids would ensure that they would not be allowed off campus at lunchtime as they were unsupervised.

It is my belief that if there is a meal provided then they should either take that, or bring a packed lunch.

It is only a matter of time until some child is injured or worse before the head teacher puts a stop to this practice, too late for all involved including the driver of the vehicle who will have to live with the consequences.
