Community / Funding secured to replace sails on the Swan

A project focusing on the Seafield seafront in Yell has also received funding

A PROGRAMME to replace sails on the Swan and a project focusing on restoring the seafront at North-A-Voe in Yell have been picked for funding as part of Scotland’s Year of Coast and Waters.

The Swan Trust has received £5,000 to go towards replacing three sails on the historic ship.

The trust plans to replace the sails at a combined cost of £18,920. It is currently around £2,500 short.

The replacement scheme has received funding from a range of organisations, from the local fishing fleet, the Scottish Fishermen’s Trust, Grieg Seafood and the Peoples Postcode Lottery.

Chair of the Swan Trust David Goodlad said: “We are incredibly grateful for this support, which will enable us to replace these sails and continue to provide life changing sail training experiences for many years to come.

“With Swan’s fishing heritage, the support from the fishing and seafood sector is particularly humbling, and shows both the importance of the work of our volunteers and the Swan as a living heritage asset for Shetland.

“While we do offer some commercial trips to help raise funds, we rely on donations, sponsorship and other funding to help us cover annual costs and maintenance. We would like to thank everyone for their support and belief in the objectives of the Trust.”

Meanwhile, the Seafield Seafront Trust (SCIO) has been awarded £6,283 for a project to undertake condition surveys of listed structures at the shorefront of Seafield in North-A-Voe in Yell.

The surveys will be used to inform the SCIO in the development of a master plan for the long-term development and management of the site for community use.

John Tonner, convener of the Seafield Seafront Trust, said: “This grant is the foundation stone for the work that must be completed to achieve the trust’s objective of restoration and management, of the Seafield Seafront, for community recreation.”
