Letters / A remarkable candidate
Nearing the end of this Scottish election campaign in Shetland, my admiration for all the candidates continues to grow. ]
As an introvert, I am in awe of people willing to subject themselves to such scrutiny; the bravery it takes to stick your head above the parapet. Hats off to them.
However, for me there is one candidate that stands head and shoulders above all the others. Despite being new to politics, Hannah Mary’s composure, assuredness and poise is remarkable. She already conducts herself like a consummate and influential leader.
However, it is her natural instinct for social justice – as her manifesto puts it ‘leaving no one behind’ – that convinced me, many months ago, that she is someone who could genuinely improve the lives of Shetlanders, whatever their background or circumstances. If only we give her that chance.
She is of a quality of candidate that does not come along very often, and I can see my friends, neighbours, fellow islanders, and even those holding opposing political opinions, recognising that fact.
We have someone of special, and not inconsiderable, talent in our midst, and I hope the people of Shetland lend her their votes and allow her to fulfil her potential.
Her election would put Shetland firmly in the centre of the political map in Scotland, far from the political doldrums to which we have been cast for so long.
They call us ‘remote’, but our hopes, needs and opinions are as important as anyone’s, so through Hannah Mary, let’s allow our voice to be heard.’
