Shetland Fish Producers’ Organisation has launched a feasibility study into the idea, with funding coming from the Shetland Fisheries Local Action Group.
Among the possibilities for a marketplace include a space to “maximise retail opportunities” for seafood and other local food and drink products, as well as an eating area.
There could also be small scale processing units to encourage the development of new products, a cook school and a learning room.
The study is being carried out by SAC Consulting and it has now launched an online survey.
One Shetland News reader recently suggested in a letter that the soon to be replaced Lerwick fish market could be a possible location for an indoor market.
Shetland Fish Producers’ Organisation policy officer Sheila Keith said the consultants are already impressed by the “diversity” of the isles’ food and drink sector.
“We feel that more could be done to showcase the fantastic seafood we have here and were keen to identify the best way forward for such a project,” she said.
“We would be interested in something which would complement other initiatives in Shetland and encourage entrepreneurship in the seafood sector.
“We know what other countries do to promote their seafood industries to their communities, e.g. the Fisketorget in Bergen.
“Already the consultants are impressed with the rich diversity of food and drink originating in the isles and are looking to see how this can collectively be better showcased alongside seafood.
“I’d urge folk to take a few minutes to fill in the survey – it will be a huge help in understanding what may be economically viable.”
