YouTuber travels from London to Shetland – just to try food at Frankie’s

SOME people might travel far for a good plate of food – but how about coming from London just for a taste of a Shetland chippy?

Food YouTuber Robbie Thompson did just that last week, going on a “30 hour mission” to sample food at Frankie’s in Brae – Britain’s most northerly fish and chip shop.

After getting fish and chips, scallops and mussels – which he rated 10/10 – Thompson then headed back south on the boat again that night.

Speaking in the recently published video, he said the food was “phenomenal, fresh and local” – which he said made up for it being slightly on the “pricey” side.

Prior to his trip to Brae on the bus he went to the Harbour cafe in Lerwick after coming off the boat, enjoying a sassermaet and egg roll.

Speaking to Shetland News, Thompson said he “absolutely loved” being in the isles, while he highlighted the friendliness of the people – with the YouTuber often speaking with locals.

“I mainly did the video as I’m searching for new and fresh content and even though Frankie’s is well known it’s not heavily covered on social media,” he said.

“I’ve also never been to the Shetland islands and having watched a couple of videos on it really got excited about wanting to visit.

“I absolutely loved everything about the island, the scenery the way of life, the food of course. But most of all the people.

“The friendliness and openness of the people really is a stark contrast to how people interact with each other in London but I would also say south of England as a whole.

“Everyone I spoke to along the journey was just lovely, friendly and helpful. It really was an eye opener.”

His journey north started off with a train journey from London’s King’s Cross to Edinburgh, having left home at 6.30am.

However potential “disaster” struck when he missed his train north from the Scottish capital to Aberdeen due to delays.

But the train company put on a taxi to the Granite City, with Thompson making it to the NorthLink ferry terminal with 38 minutes to spare.

He said he had to leave Shetland on the boat the same day because he had a flight to catch at the weekend, but he hopes to come back in the future for longer.

It is not the only Shetland-related food video which has been uploaded to YouTube recently.

The video on the Sorted Food channel – which has three million subscribers – saw a group of food-loving friends make the traditional meal stap and krappin, which includes ingredients like oatmeal and fish livers.

With the ingredients at one point stuffed into a fish head, the video – which has received more than 400,000 views since being uploaded last week – is called ‘Are the UK’s weirdest meals actually good?’.
