Managing the Cloud

A LOCAL accountancy firm is hosting a free workshop in Lerwick next week to help small businesses and the self-employed to become more efficient by using the ‘Cloud’.

Martin Tregonning of Sumburgh based Tregonning & Co. said that one of the most common phrases bandied about when talking about digital technology was the Cloud.

Yet few people understand what the Cloud actually entails and how it can be beneficial, and soon essential, to running a business.

“The Cloud can cover everything from how you send out your invoices to how you pay your taxes and everything in between,” Tregonning said.

“Shetland has a larger proportion of small business than many areas, but historically, mainly due to poor connectivity, it has a lower uptake of Cloud based technology. But the Cloud does offer an opportunity to get ahead and take control of your business.”

The workshop sets out to further explain changes in the pipeline, which make it essential for small businesses to get to grips with digital technology.

“Most importantly,” Tregonning added, “the seminar will explore how small businesses can get out in front of the technology and have it work for them, rather than the other way around.”

The workshop is being supported by the UK software firm Sage and Smart Pensions, as well as local professionals such as software developer Mesomorphic.

The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) and Shetland News are both promoting the event.

The workshop will run On Thursday 30 November from 7pm to 9pm and is being held in the Islesburgh Community Centre.
