Letters / Nuclear deterrent
I am sorry Douglas Young, I am not quite sure of the point you are making (Unclear on nuclear; SN, 10/04/16).
I did however emphasise several times, I was writing my own personal views, not for or on behalf Wir Shetland.
My views are in the blog you quote, I am absolutely happy for all to see, my answer to Douglas’s question (Ian Tinkler to Douglas Young reference trident missiles):
They are missiles, deployed on SSBMs (surface to surface ballistic missiles). Part of the NATO nuclear deterrent. Both Salmond and Sturgeon fully endorse NATO and have accepted NATO nuclear protocols.
That means in time of tension, Lerwick Harbour, Sumburgh airport, Tingwall and Scatsta, could harbour any and or all of NATO nuclear sea and air based weapons.
The SG would not ask, just accept and Wir Shetland would not have much say!!!
That would all change if Shetland became independent. Then Shetlanders would have absolute control (that is, a democratic choice would exist for Shetlanders, to decide, which forces could be deployed to Shetland and whether to accept NATO protocols.
