News / Make sure you can vote
ANYONE who hasn’t received a poll card in the last few days is being asked to get in touch with the local electoral registration office if they want to vote in the upcoming Holyrood election.
The Scottish Parliament poll takes place on Thursday 5 May and cards were sent out to everyone who is already on the electoral register.
The voting age at these elections, as with the Scottish independence referendum in September 2014, is now 16. While poll cards are not required to vote, they do confirm that you are registered.
Shetland’s depute electoral registration officer Ian Leslie said: “Poll cards have been sent out to those on our electoral register. Electors who have recently applied to be added to the register, during March, will have their names added to the register on 1 April and will receive a poll card shortly afterwards.
“It’s important that anyone who wishes to vote on 5 May, and doesn’t receive a card, gets in touch with us before the deadline for registration, which is 18 April. You can contact us either in person, or by phone or email. There is also the online registration option.”
- For anyone not already registered, there’s an option to register online at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote or by contacting the Electoral Registration Office at 20 Commercial Road, Lerwick, by calling (01595) 745700 or by emailing ero@shetland.gov.uk.
