News / Althing debates parenting
THE ALTHING debating society is this month considering a motion suggesting that “modern parenting is spoiling our children”.
Nowadays parents have access to more advice than ever before. Gurus, books, television shows and Internet discussion forums are all keen to offer advice on how best to bring up the offspring.
But are today’s children any the better for experiencing modern parenting techniques?
Jane Matthews and Oksana Khusainova will argue that they most certainly are not, while Donald Anderson and Genevieve White will be opposing the motion.
The debate promises to be a lively one. It will be held in Tingwall Hall on Saturday, 28 November, starting at 7.30pm.
As usual, there will be bannocks and home bakes in the break, followed by the opportunity for you to have your say.
Althing secretary Karen Fraser said that the group is currently on the lookout for some fresh blood.
“We’re looking for new speakers and committee members. We’ve also recently been considering trying out some new venues around Shetland.”
She added: “The Althing Social Group has been debating all manner of serious and humorous topics since 1950.
“Althing audiences vote on the quality of the arguments they hear on the night rather than their own bias, while the most skilful debaters will often construct an argument for a view that is not necessarily their own.
“If this sounds interesting, why not come along and see what the Althing is all about? As the cold winter nights draw in, you might find an energising debate on a Saturday evening is just what the doctor ordered!”
The Althing can also be visited on Facebook.
