News / Kayakers enjoy snowy scenes in Weisdale
A GROUP of enthusiastic sea kayakers enjoyed some stunning scenery when they took to the water in Weisdale voe on Saturday.
After strong winds had battered the islands for much of last week, the kayakers took relish in the flat calm water against a backdrop of snow-dusted hillsides.
Angus Nicol of Sea Kayak Shetland said the kayakers sought to get their paddles out whenever the weather allowed, and Saturday had been an especially beautiful day – though they did have to put on a few more clothes than normal.
“We go out in different conditions just practicing,” he said, “trying to keep on form and enjoy the conditions.
“It’s amazing how many things you see, and with the snow some things show up better, like a water rail running across the burn. You wouldn’t see that on an ordinary day.”
Angus, who has been kayaking for “teens” of years having always enjoyed working with small boats as a youngster, said the local kayak club enjoyed a healthy membership of more than 50. Tourists visiting from south also regularly take part in expeditions.
“You just see so much more from the water,” he said.
“With the likes of those cottages [see photo above], the best view is from the sea.”
