News / Yell woman wins Miss Edinburgh crown

Lana Elaine Fraser.

A YOUNG woman from Yell has been named Miss Edinburgh Galaxy – and will now be entered in a Scotland-wide grand final.

Twenty two year old Lana Elaine Fraser, originally from Burravoe, said she was “completely overwhelmed” and had been “so shocked when I opened the email” informing her she’d won the pageant.

The organisers wrote to say that she was one of those selected for Miss Galaxy Scotland 2015 out of hundreds of applicants. “We think that your eyes are so striking and we love the way you style your long, brown hair!” they told her. “You have a really great look!”

“I almost deleted the email because I didn’t recognise the address. I thought it was spam!” Fraser said. “I have to say, I am completely overwhelmed. Very excited, but quite nervous.

“I’ve never competed in a pageant before so this is a brand new experience for me. I’ve gotten in contact with some of the other finalists and they are all really lovely so I’m expecting the final to be a good laugh regardless of the outcome.

“I’m hoping to use my title to raise money for charities that I care about and mean a lot to me.”

Fraser, who now lives in Edinburgh, is a professional musician as well as a tutor, composer, artist and model. She plays with Glasgow-based folk group Gria.

She is part of a modelling agency in Scotland’s central belt and had a photo shoot done in order to update her portfolio, before deciding to enter Miss Edinburgh City “out of curiosity”.

“Once I got my photos back from the photographer I decided to send them into the pageant,” she told Shetland News. “It is something I hadn’t done before and I figured I might as well try and make use of the photos I had.

“I didn’t think I’d ever get a reply from them – let alone be crowned Miss Edinburgh City and get into the finals!”

Among the prizes for winning Miss Galaxy Scotland are a trip to the Florida to compete in the Galaxy International Pageant – including photo shoots and pool parties – along with dresses from The Dress Studio, Beauty UK make-up and a modelling portfolio with FAB Photoshoots.
