News / Court round up

A round up of cases that were dealt with at Lerwick Sheriff Court on Thursday.

Underage sex
LERWICK man Callum Aitchison, who admitted having sexual relations with a 14 year old girl at two addresses in the town between December 2012 and February 2013, has been placed under supervision for 12 months.

The 22 year old, of Mill Lane, Lerwick, was also ordered to carry out 70 hours of unpaid work over the next nine months and has been placed on the sex offenders register.

Defence agent Tommy Allan told Lerwick Sheriff Court on Thursday that Aitchison had brought the relationship to an end after becoming concerned and it was only some time later that it came to light.

Allan said his client was a first offender who had drifted into a situation where “she may well have been more mature than her years and Mr Aitchison at the time was less mature than he should have been”.

Lapse of cool
A LERWICK fishworker who headbutted a man for insulting his family when he saw him in the early hours of Sunday 9 March was ordered to carry out 60 hours of unpaid work over the next six months.

Defence agent Tommy Allan said 28 year old Lee Hunter, of 40 Hoofields, had told him he had suffered “a momentary lapse of cool” when he ran across Lerwick’s Commercial Street to strike the man with such force he fell backwards against a wall, though suffered no injury.

He added that had he not been so drunk he may not have suffered this lapse of cool, and had been locked in the cells until he sobered up by police officers who observed the assault from their parked car.

Sheriff Mann told Hunter he was sailing close to the wind as he had previous convictions for assault, but acknowledged the last such case was seven years ago.

Drunk motorcyclist
A FORKLIFT driver from Ollaberry has been banned for one year and fined £400 after he was caught riding his motorcycle in Brae while more than one and a half times the legal alcohol limit.

Anthony Gallagher, aged 48, of 18 Runnadale, was stopped near the Mid Brae Inn on 15 July by police acting on a tip off.

No insurance
Brae labourer Liam Johnson was banned from driving for six months and fined £300 after he admitted driving his grandfather’s car without an MOT or insurance on 29 May.

The 24 year old had been fishing off the west side and was returning home to 29 Skelladale when he was stopped by police in Brae.

Sheriff Mann said Johnson had been convicted of driving without insurance before and therefore had no excuse, despite the defence saying he had previously been insured to drive the car and assumed he was now and that it had an MOT.

Speeding architect
AN ARCHITECT was fined £250 and awarded six penalty points for driving at 89mph on the main A970 near Fladdabister on 14 May.

The court heard 36 year old Adrian Wishart, of North House, Hoswick, had a busy morning and needed to drop people off in town that day and had not noticed his speed when he was stopped by police.
