Kirk art exhibition among the activities at Whalsay Summer Days
THE FIRST local artists exhibition is set to be held this coming week in the Whalsay Kirk.
The exhibition has been organised by the building’s owner Whalsay Kirk Development Company in partnership with local artist Sophie Williamson, whose “enthusiasm, dedication and extensive network of contacts have been instrumental in bringing the project to life”.
Artists from Whalsay and across Shetland are taking part, including some who have never exhibited work publicly before.
The exhibition is taking place from Monday (27 July) to Sunday (2 August), between 3pm and 5pm each day, and it forms part of the Whalsay Summer Days event.
Organisers said the exhibition brings together an “eclectic mix of original work, including oil paintings, fine art, pottery, photography, digital artwork, textiles, crafts and other handmade creations”.
Many of the original artworks will also be available to buy, while there will also be badge making on offer too.
The development company said the event is an “early glimpse of the future for Whalsay Kirk”.
The community group bought the kirk – which dates back to the 1700s – from the Church of Scotland in late 2023, and it said the building is continuing its transformation into a “creative community hub”.
The group hopes that the exhibition will become the first of many celebrating the creativity and talent in Whalsay and Shetland.
There stands to be fun for all the family at this year’s Whalsay Summer Days, which runs from Monday to Sunday.
Activities on offer in the Bonnie Isle include sports, sea swimming, bannock making, sailing, bus tours, 5K runs, pilates, live music and a “blowy up mattress race” – but that is just a taste of what is scheduled.
More information can be found on the Whalsay Summer Days Facebook page.
