Community / ‘Milestone moment’ as development group becomes owner of Whalsay’s Brough Kirk

THE BROUGH Kirk is back in the ownership of the Whalsay community.

After successful negotiations with the Church of Scotland the ownership of the historic community building passed to the Whalsay Kirk Development Company today (Friday).

The group said it was a “milestone moment” in its vision to transform the building into a “viable and vibrant addition to our community”.

The process has been helped along the way thanks to a grant from the Scottish Land Fund.

The ownership of the kirk offers the opportunity to “enhance the variety and availability of provision to people both living in the isle and also people visiting the isle”, the group said.

The B-listed building dates back to the 1700s and is surrounded by a graveyard.

Earlier this year Shetland News visited the kirk – read the report here.
