Public meetings planned as two Westside chapels go on the market
PUBLIC meetings are set to be held over the coming days to explore ways of potentially keeping two Westside chapels in the community.
The Culswick and Westerskeld chapels were both recently put up for sale by the Methodist church.
The Culswick chapel has an asking price of more than £25,000, with Westerskeld on the market for offers over £40,000.
Public meetings have now been arranged to allow the communities to discuss the sales.
This will include exploring possible options for retaining the chapels in the communities.
The Westerskeld meeting will take place in the chapel itself on Tuesday (3 November) at 7pm.
The Culswick meeting is scheduled for Saturday (7 November) in the Back Hall, Skeld at 3pm.
Dated to 1893, the small stone-built Culswick chapel is known for its secluded, outlying location – with no parking or mains water, for example.
It was built using funds raised within the community by people of all denominations on a plot of land donated by Mrs R.L. Allan, who is commemorated by a plaque above the door.
Estate agent Arthur and Simpson said the Westerskeld chapel dates further back to 1857, but it has been refurbished over the years.
The two chapels are not the only kirks in Shetland on the open market right now, with the Lerwick Congregational Church available for offers over £90,000.
In recent years the Church of Scotland has also sold off a number of kirks in Shetland, with reduced congregations among the reasons.
