Letters / Well-reasoned debate

The Althing’s packed debate on Saturday night proposed the motion “The Time is Right for Scottish Independence”.

The large swing to a Yes vote was achieved both by strong, well-reasoned debate from both Mike Mackenzie and Danus Skene, and a scaremongering and very rambling stream of negativity from Alistair Carmichael and Ian Duncan.

With the yes vote up from 58 to 70 and the no vote down from 57 to 48 the hall poll showed just over 50 per cent of the entire audience in favour of independence.

For this to happen in the Scottish Secretary’s own constituency leads me to conclude “80 per cent yes and nothing less” may need to be revised. Upwards.

Thanks should go not only to all four speakers, but to the chairman, the hall committee and the people who took the trouble to turn out.

Douglas Young,

Sumburgh
