News / Blavod buy Blackwood
BLACKWOOD, the company originally set up to develop a whisky distillery in Shetland, has been sold by administrators to drinks company Blavod for £50,000.
Founded in 2002, the company also developed a white sprit business in an attempt to fund the long-term whisky distillery investment, which never came to fruition.
Initially planned to be built at Catfirth, near South Nesting, the project was moved to Unst, where the RAF had just vacated the Saxa Vord camp, in 2006.
The company went into administration in May 2008 and was forced into liquidation a year later.
At that stage Blavod acquired the licence to distribute Blackwood’s along with its sister brands Jago’s vodka liqueur and Diva vodka.
Blavod has now reached an agreement with the administrators of subsidiary company Shetland Spirit Company to buy the brand.
Blavod chairman Don Goulding is quoted as saying; “The acquisition of this brand together with Diva and Jago’s provides us with the platform and incentive to accelerate further growth of these brands in the UK and internationally.”
He added that Blavod would focus on breaking into the American market after securing a deal to supply almost 200 Tesco stores in England and Wales last year.
