News / “It’s wir oil”

SHETLAND MSP Tavish Scott has once again stressed Shetland’s key role in the forthcoming battle over who owns the rich oil and gas reserves surrounding the isles.

Responding to Monday’s announcement by the Scottish government that the industry could generate £48 billion in tax revenues over the next six years, Scott said on Tuesday first minister Alex Salmond had no claim to all that cash.

“An oil boom in the North Sea and west of Shetland would be great news for the community in whom these reserves exist – Shetland,” Scott said.

“I discussed the importance of Shetland’s energy resources on Monday with elected members of Shetland Islands Council.

“On this there is no doubt – it’s no your oil Alex, it’s wirs.”

Earlier this month, the UK’s Office of Budget Responsibility predicted the tax revenues to be just £31 billion.
