SHETLAND’S archive of films received a major boost this week with a £25,000 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

The money goes to the Shetland Moving Image Archive Group, matching a grant from the European LEADER fund.

The money will be spent developing the Shetland film archive, employing a development officer, training volunteers, cataloguing films, expanding the website and setting up points where the public can view digitally remastered films.

Shetland archivist Brian Smith said: “Old films are unique records of people, events and activities from our past.

“It is important that we work to preserve as many of these records as possible, and make them available for viewing and studying now and in the future.”

Colin McLean of the Heritage Lottery Fund added: “This is an exciting project driven by Shetland’s local residents. It demonstrates how our heritage can be a living part of a community bringing people together to learn from and enjoy their shared identity.”
