News / Bling dummies are dangerous
BLING dummies available locally in Shetland should be avoided as they pose a risk for babies, according to Shetland trading standards officers.
Trading standards manager David Marsh said that the customised dummies had until recently been produced in Shetland by one person as a cottage industry. They had since stopped, but similar products are easily available on the internet, he said.
The new trend is for people to buy normal dummies and then adorn them with plastic and crystal gems in a variety of colours.
However the bling dummies, as they are called, pose a serious risk of choking for babies and small children if the gems become detached.
Mr Marsh said people might not realise how serious the threat was, but urged people to avoid using them at all costs.
“Do not be tempted to give a bling dummy to a baby this Christmas,” he said. “If your baby receives one in a present, do not allow them to use it. And if you’ve got a business idea, do get in touch with us so that we can help you to get things right and avoid problems later on.”
