News / Two local men admit serious assault

TWO SHETLAND men are likely to go to prison for assaulting another man at his home address in Lerwick, leaving him with severe injuries that could have endangered his life.

Dale Henry, aged 29, and Damien Hunt, aged 27, both described as prisoners in Aberdeen, admitted a charge of assault to severe injury and permanent impairment when they appeared from custody before Lerwick Sheriff Court, on Thursday. Hunt committed the crime while on bail.

The court heard how the two visited their victim’s house on 3 May this year, and instantly launched into a “lengthy, sustained and extremely violent assault”.

Procurator fiscal Duncan Mackenzie said the motive behind the unprovoked attack was revenge for his ex-girlfriend having an affair with the complainer.

The two left their victim lying helplessly in a pool of blood. Procurator fiscal Duncan Mackenzie told the court that the victim had been unrecognisable for those who knew him.

He added that the victim was fortunate to be alive, and added that it was not yet clear what the future would hold for him, as he would not make a full recovery.

Sheriff Graeme Napier told Henry and Hunt that he could see no alternative to a custodial sentence.

He called for social enquiry reports, and deferred sentence until 16 August. Both were remanded in custody.
