News / Swimming: Strachan takes bronze medal

Andrea Strachan with her bronze medal

LERWICK swimmer Andrea Strachan has won a bronze medal in the 50 metre breaststroke final at the British Gas Amateur Swimming Association National Swimming Championships, on Tuesday night.

Andrea started the day in fine form qualifying for the finals as the 7th fastest swimmer from the morning heats.

Coach Petur Peturson said that Andrea knew she would have to be at her best in the final, and “she certainly did not disappoint”.

With only six tenths of a second separating the top swimmers, Andrea’s time of 32.59 seconds smashed her previous best time.

Today (Wednesday), Amy Harper, from Gulberwick, will compete in the heats of the 100 metre freestyle.

The following day, both girls will be in action; Andrea in the 100 metre breaststroke and Amy in the 50 metre freestyle.

The amateur swimming championships are being held at the Pond Forge Leisure Centre, in Sheffield.
