Canadian troubadour returns for concert on Monday

Old Man Luedecke.

CANADIAN roots musician and banjo troubadour Old Man Luedecke is making an eagerly awaited return to Shetland for a show at Mareel tomorrow evening (Monday).

The Toronto-born, long time Nova Scotian resident first began making music in the early 2000s and soon chalked up two Juno award-winning albums.

His winning combination of high energy, banjo-driven stompers, touching guitar ballads and dry humour proved a real tonic for audiences at the 2013 Shetland Folk Festival.

Thirteen years on Luedecke – whose first name is Chris – says he is delighted to be returning to the islands. He even became an honorary member of the islands’ renowned “come can with me” society on his last visit.

“I’m sure everyone says it, but my time at the folk festival is something I’ve continued to think of and pine for every year since,” he said.

“From enjoying everyone I met and every gig I played, the lambs, land and jumpers, the collectors of old beer cans, to marvelling at a meal of chips and lasagne and bleary breakfasts, I feel so privileged to pop over and see you again.”

For the uninitiated, he says the show features “high energy catchy banjo songs and touching folk-tinged songs about family and food and wonder”.

“I keep complaining to a humorous minimum and elevate the mundane to the sublime. For fans of lyrics and dry humour, every song is a journey of the real fashioned into something touching and transporting.”

Old Man Luedecke is playing at Mareel in Lerwick on Monday (13 July) with opening sets from Keirynn Topp and Adam Guest. Tickets are available here
