Community orchestra

THE BATON has been raised to start a new community orchestra in Shetland featuring musicians from right across the islands.

Local leading lights in the classical music scene have formed a steering group and will hold the inaugural AGM for Shetland Community Orchestra at 2.30pm on 6 February at Lerwick’s Islesburgh Community Centre.

The orchestra will be open to musicians of all ages with a minimum Grade 4 standard on their instrument and hopes to rehearse and perform throughout the isles.

The steering group of local teachers and players includes Nigel Hayward, Annalie Irvine, Carolyn Johnston, Neil Morris and Donald Macdonald, with support from Shetland Arts.

Mr MacDonald said: “Music at its best brings people together. It is hoped that the orchestra will provide a supportive environment for players to hone their instrumental skills whilst enjoying the experience of rehearsing and performing great music.”

THE SCOTTISH White Fish Producers’ Association has joined the wildlife charity WWF’s campaign to conserve fish stocks and reform the Common Fisheries Policy.

SWFPA chairman Mike Park said the WWF/industry alliance was “the ideal platform to push for sensible change to the Common Fisheries Policy”.

WWF’s marine policy officer Mireille Thom said having the SWFPA on board gave the campaign “a huge boost” and looked forward to other organisations from the catching sector joining.
