Jack-knife

STRONG winds were responsible for a lorry to jack knife and block the main road leading to the Belmont ferry terminal on Unst on Thursday evening.

Police supervised the clearance of the lorry and the road was declared passable within two hours of the incident , which occurred around 5.30pm

Peach of a beach

TWO Shetland beaches have been voted into the top three in Scotland by a survey undertaken by charity Keep Scotland Beautiful.

The St Ninian’s Isle tombolo came first while Yell’s Sands of Breckon was third among beach visitors’ preferences.

Earlier this year, Keep Scotland Beautiful asked beach users to name their favourite beach from a list 56 Scottish beaches.

Smashed window

A PICK up truck had its window smashed while it was parked in the HNP Marine Engineering yard, by Commercial Street, Lerwick overnight on Wednesday.

Local police are looking for any information that might help them identify the vandal responsible.

Solar schools

A LOCAL school could win solar panels worth more than £20,000 by entering a competition showing off their green credentials.

Up to 750 schools throughout the UK will receive free solar panels that could cut their electricity bills by 20 per cent as part of the £15 million British Gas competition by demonstrating how sustainable they are.

The winning schools will also receive a free energy display meter and can join the competition by in the application form on www.generationgreen.co.uk/solarpanels. The deadline for applications is 22 October, and winners will be announced in November.
