News / Two wins for Flaws in Glasgow table tennis
SHETLAND’S table tennis star Lynda Flaws recorded two successive victories to qualify for the next round of the women’s singles tournament at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on Tuesday.
She comfortably saw off the challenge of Angelisa Freemann from St Kitts and Nevis 11-9, 11-5, 11-6, 11-2 for a 4-0 victory in the afternoon’s play.
The 21 year old’s evening match, her second in the preliminary round, proved an altogether tougher proposition. She and Jamaican Yvonne Foster went the full distance, Flaws opening up a 3-1 lead before being pegged back to 3-3 and then winning the seventh and final game 11-9.
The final score in a tense battle was 11-6, 8-11, 11-2, 12-10, 9-11, 11-13, 11-9, meaning Flaws goes through to the last 64 of the competition.
Flaws’ next assignment at Glasgow’s Scotstoun sports campus sees her up against 28 year old Nigerian player Cecilia Akpan. The match is due to begin at noon on Wednesday.
