Families invited to connect with nature at Spiggie open day
RSPB Shetland is set to host its third annual open day at Spiggie later this month.
A range of family-friendly nature activities will be on offer at RSPB Loch of Spiggie Hide and Scousburgh Sands from 10am to 2pm on Thursday 13 August.
The event aims to get families connecting with each other whilst connecting with nature, learning about the natural world, meeting the RSPB Shetland team and having fun.
Activities include Guide in the Hide sessions, guided walks, sand sculptures, a nature spot station, birdwatching and rockpooling.
Black Raven Beauty will also be on hand to provide face painting, along with appearances from Miss Sprinkles’ ice cream van and Da Fantin Burger food truck.
Community engagement officer Ali Robertson said they were delighted to be hosting the event again this year.
“Spiggie Open Day concludes our summer programme of activities at RSPB Shetland and coincides with the last summer bird surveys undertaken by the reserves team, so we always look forward to it as an end-of-season event,” she said.
“This year we have a couple of new activities, our popular biosecurity Rat Catchie game and birdwatching from the beach.
“Loch of Spiggie is an RSPB nature reserve, so is a great place to showcase the work we do at RSPB Shetland and the benefits to nature that come from a supportive and collaborative relationship with local landowners.”
RSPB Shetland said it has done a lot of work at Spiggie Loch and surrounding areas in the recent years, such as installing a fully-accessible community hide by the loch edge, and working with local schools to create a mural on the inside.
The area is managed for nature by RSPB Shetland, which monitors loch water levels and quality, works with local landowners to graze the land and to grow crops for birds and pollinators, and a range of other measures to enhance and protect the wildlife and habitat around Loch of Spiggie.
