Historic Maggie Helen turns heads on trip to Ireland
A HISTORIC Shetland fishing boat which underwent a massive restoration effort has been pictured arriving in Ireland this week.
The Maggie Helen, also known previously as Loki, was seen sailing into Dublin Bay on the east coast of Ireland, and is currently lying at anchor in Sandycove.
Afloat Magazine reported on Monday that the arrival of the vessel had attracted a lot of attention from passing sailors and people on land too.
There was also massive interest in the restoration of the Maggie Helen back in 2022, with the crew of the traditional sail vessel Swallow undertaking the project.
She was restored in the Hays Dock shed in Lerwick where she had first been built almost 120 years later, having served as a herring fishing boat in decades previous.
The Maggie Helen was renamed Loki by her new owner Tammie Moncrieff in the 1950s, and was then used as a sailing yacht.
However she remained in storage at the Shetland Museum and Archives boat shed for 15 years, from 2007 onwards, as the museum searched for someone to carry out a full restoration.
The Swallow crew carried out extensive work on the vessel in 2022, before sailing her from the isles for completion on the mainland.
It was said then that she would take up a working life along the west coast of Britain and in France.
