SSEN encourages communities to attend consultation meetings next week

ELECTRICITY network operator SSEN Transmission is encouraging anyone interested about the company’s plans for Shetland to attend next week’s consultation meetings at various locations across the isles.

The company was acknowledging receipt of a number of questions from grassroots group Sustainable Shetland, and said it would respond through its consultation channels.

Could SSEN please answer these questions

There is significant unease in the North Mainland and on Yell at the extent and cumulative impact of proposed infrastructure works needed to connect three consented onshore wind farms.

There are also plans for a second and much larger HVDC cable connecting Shetland with the national grid, plus converter stations at the north end of the Kergord valley and near Toft.

This overview of projects has been taken from one of SSEN Transmission’s booklets.

SSEN is hosting a total of six public meetings to provide updates and hear people’s views on these projects:

  • Monday 29 June, 3-7pm, Mossbank Hall: update on the site selection for the Northern Hub
  • Tuesday 30 June, 3-8pm, Voe Hall: consultation on the south of Voe (Hamarigrind) substation and the Kergord to Northern Hub overhead line
  • Wednesday 1 July, 1-5pm, Mid Yell Hall: Energy Isles wind farm connection and Yell substation
  • Wednesday 1 July, 6-8pm, Burravoe Hall: Energy Isles wind farm connection and Yell substation
  • Thursday 2 July, 11am to 1pm, Brae Hall: Potential landfall sites for the Shetland 2 cable
  • Thursday 2 July, 3-7pm, Hillswick Hall: Potential landfall sites for the Shetland 2 cable

An SSEN Transmission spokesperson said: “We are committed to engaging openly and transparently with communities across Shetland and look forward to meeting people at our upcoming consultation events next week, including dedicated sessions on our proposed Yell substation project.
