Final phase of Lerwick Harbour dredging gets underway
THE NEXT phase of dredging in Lerwick Harbour is now underway, with work commencing today (Monday) at Dales Voe.
The work, the final phase of a significant dredging project, is being undertaken by contractor Boskalis Westminster.
The current campaign marks the conclusion of a dredging programme designed to further improve deep-water access across the port and strengthen Lerwick Harbour’s capacity to accommodate larger vessels serving a range of sectors.
Works will begin at Dales Voe and will include controlled pre-treatment of underwater rock removal followed by dredging activity.
Work is also planned at Gremista Basin and the North Ness Channel in due course. The campaign is expected to run from June to September, with 24/7 working until completion.
Drill barge Rock Mate has mobilised to Lerwick, with backhoe dredger Manu Pekka due to follow to complete the works. Both vessels previously participated in the harbour’s 2008 dredging campaign, bringing “significant operational experience” to the project.
They are supported by workboat Jenny D and cargo vessel Shetland Trader.
Lerwick Port Authority chief executive Captain Calum Grains said: “We are looking forward to completing the final phase of these dredging works, which will allow larger vessels to access the port’s facilities and deliver benefits across many sectors.
“This continued investment in Lerwick’s infrastructure is an important step in ensuring customers can make full use of the harbour’s capabilities.”
The project is being managed by Arch Henderson, while financial support is being provided by Bank of Scotland and Highlands and Islands Enterprise.
The port authority said the dredging programme will “deliver long-term benefits” for vessels operating across cruise, fishing, energy and other commercial sectors using the port.
