Aim to set up community fridge to tackle food wastage

A COMMUNITY fridge is being set up to tackle food wastage and to help support local people.

The fridge will provide a space where surplus food can be shared freely with the community, reducing waste while also giving people better access to food.

Two community fridges are already run in Orkney, and over 700 have been set up across the UK.

The project is being led by a group of local volunteers, working in partnership with the Highlands and Islands Climate Hub and the Bressay Outdoor Access Group (BOAG).

Andrea Sánchez Quiroz.

They are now inviting local groups, organisations, or businesses to come forward if they have a space that could host the fridge.

This could include community centres, halls, or other publicly accessible locations.

Andrea Sánchez Quiroz, who is a community development officer at the Highlands and Islands Climate Hub, said they were delighted to be supporting the project.

“One of our member groups in Orkney already runs two very successful community fridges, helping to reduce waste while supporting local people,” she said.

“We’re excited to see a similar initiative develop in Shetland and the benefits it can bring to the community.”

The community fridge will be run by volunteers, with plans to establish it as a subgroup of BOAG.

Work is already underway to set up the necessary infrastructure and to organise a wider volunteer group.

Anyone interested in hosting the fridge or getting involved is encouraged to get in touch by emailing shetlandcommunityfridge@gmail.com
