Election / Climate the big issue at final election hustings next week

THE FINAL election hustings before voters go to the polls on 7 May will focus on the big issues of climate change, Shetland’s environment and the transition to net zero.

Hosted by the Shetland Climate Café, all eight candidates have confirmed their participation at the event which will take place at the Islesburgh Community Centre on Thursday 23 April between 7pm and 8.30pm.

The climate hustings aims to move the topic of climate change and how society responds to the challenges higher up the election agenda.

It will also give the audience the opportunity to question candidates on their party’s climate policies and its implications for island communities such as Shetland.

With fishing, tourism, and energy forming the backbone of the local economy, one of the organisers, Ayesha Huda, said: “Climate change is the biggest risk to humanity today, and for communities like Shetland, that risk is immediate and tangible.

“It is essential to consider how Shetland can secure its future while also reducing carbon emissions and adapting to climate change.”

Climate emissions in Shetland remain significantly higher than the Scottish average, and the community continues to face challenges linked to fossil fuel dependence for transport and heating resulting in high fuel poverty rates.

Moderated by Shetland News editor Hans J Marter, the event will feature short opening statements from each candidate, followed by a Q&A session.

Co-organiser Andrea Sanchez added: “The event will provide an important opportunity for constructive discussion between candidates and the public on one of the most pressing issues facing Shetland and the wider world.”

Booking is not essential, but organisers ask that people register via Eventbrite or Facebook to help with planning.

Questions can also be submitted in advance through the booking link.
