Housing / Plans to go on show for proposed housing development at old Urafirth school
PEOPLE will get the chance this weekend to view plans for a proposed housing development at the old Urafirth school.
The event, to be hosted by Northmavine Community Development Company (NCDC) at the Hillswick Hall, said community feedback will play an “important role” in shaping the next steps for the project and will ensure it meets local needs.
NCDC says there is a growing need in the community for affordable housing to rent.
The old Urafirth school site includes an old classroom and a two-storey schoolhouse, with the latter not currently lived-in and in need of refurbishment.
Turning the site into a housing development has been under discussion for a number of years, with NCDC previously undertaking a structural survey of the classroom before carrying out a housing needs assessment for Northmavine.
Initial architectural feasibility drawings were also completed in 2023.
The housing project open days will take place at the Hillswick Hall this coming Saturday and Sunday (18/19 April) between 10am and 4pm on both days.
NCDC chair Bob McGeady said: “This is an important opportunity for existing and prospective residents of Northmavine to have a say in shaping the future of the Northmavine community.
“I would encourage as many people as possible to come along to the exhibition, have a good look at what is proposed, enjoy a cup of tea or coffee and share your views on the proposals.
“We are also trying to find out what people’s housing needs are to support applications for funding if the project proceeds.”
If the project progresses then NCDC would look to acquire the property from owner Shetland Islands Council, potentially through a community asset transfer or negotiated sale.
