All eyes on Lerwick as Up Helly Aa returns

LYNDEN Nicolson has begun his big day as guizer jarl of Lerwick’s Up Helly Aa.

Nicolson and his squad of 65 left Islesburgh earlier this morning – following a stomach-lining breakfast – to head out into the public for the first time.

Among his squad are his two sons Ryan and Logan as well as three nephews, two grandnephews and two grandnieces.

Nicolson, who is representing Knut the Great, will lead his squad around town through various engagements and visits before the torch-lit procession at night and the trips around the halls.

The 58-year-old previously told Shetland News that the procession will be a “once in a lifetime” experience.

He said he has been attending Up Helly Aa since before he turned a teenager, and spoke of his desire to create a suit which stood out from the rest.

Having been elected to the committee in October 2008, it is said that Nicolson has had to endure the longest wait in Up Helly Aa history to become jarl – while he is also believed to be the oldest to lead Lerwick’s fire festival.

Among the engagements today will be a civic reception at Lerwick Town Hall, where SIC convener Andrea Manson is sure to poke a few jibes at Nicolson.

Alongside visits to the likes of schools and care homes, the public will get a chance to mingle with the squad at the Shetland Museum at 3.30pm, although this is via bookings only and is sold out.

The torchlit procession will get underway at 7.30pm, with the galley being sent to its fiery demise before Nicolson’s squad – and the many guizers – start their long night visiting halls.

The bill meanwhile was put up earlier this morning at the Market Cross, and it is due to remain there until 5pm.
