News / Clan to hold open day in search for new volunteers
CHARITY Clan Cancer Support is on the hunt for new volunteers in the isles, with an open day set to be held next month.
The north-east cancer charity is encouraging people to use their free time to support people being impacted by cancer.
The volunteers’ open day will take place next on Monday 2 June from 12-2pm at Clan’s Shetland wellbeing centre at Islesburgh Community Centre in Lerwick.
Volunteers are being sought to offer its listening and support service, which allows people impacted by a cancer diagnosis – either directly or indirectly – to speak to someone.
No experience is required, with all training provided by the charity. Clan recommends volunteers commit to a minimum of three-and-a-half hours per week.
Attendees are welcome to drop in throughout the event with Clan team members on hand to advise anyone interested in applying.
There are also further opportunities for people in Shetland to volunteer this summer, with Clan looking for people to care for the public artwork in its The BookBench Trail from late June.
The BookBench Trail will go live across the north-east, Moray, Orkney and Shetland from June 30, with 41 large BookBench sculptures being displayed.
Clan’s volunteer coordinator Pamela Fenton said anyone looking to volunteer does not need to be a “cancer expert”, but just has to be a “good listener and to give your time”.
“In return you’ll get training and the opportunity to play an important role in your local cancer support charity,” she said.
“The benefits of volunteering can be felt by the charity and the volunteer. Volunteering can provide work experience, new friendships and the opportunity to develop new skills which can enrich your working and personal life.”
“We’d urge anyone who is interested in getting involved to come along to our open day at our Shetland centre where they can find out more about the charity and the opportunities available.”
