Education / UHI aquaculture students celebrated at national awards
UHI Shetland students enjoyed a successful night at a national awards ceremony celebrating the achievements of learners in the rural sector.
The ALBAS, which are Lantra Scotland’s awards for land-based and aquaculture skills, were held last night (Thursday) at the Crieff Hydro.
The ceremony commends the achievements of learners and underscore the significance of employers investing in skills.
Four UHI Shetland apprentices were shortlisted as finalists; Derek Dunning (SVQ2 aquaculture apprentice), Lewis Henderson (SVQ3 aquaculture apprentice), Mary Collins (SVQ aquaculture apprentice) and Robaidh Halliday (SVQ4 aquaculture apprentice).
All four were recognised on the night, with Dunning winning in the aquaculture category.
Lewis Henderson and Mary Collins were runner-ups in the aquaculture category, with Robaidh Halliday the runner-up in the higher education section.
UHI Shetland supports the aquaculture industry by offering a wide range of courses designed to suit the range of industry standards and needs.
With more than 100 modern apprentices in aquaculture this year, many of the courses offered by UHI Shetland are delivered around Scotland.
Aquaculture senior lecturer Stuart Fitzsimmons said: “Congratulations to Derek, Lewis, Mary and Robaidh on their success.
“This achievement showcases our commitment to fostering a community of learners who contribute significantly to the advancement of aquaculture practices.”
UHI principal and CEO Professor Jane Lewis added: “This is quite an achievement for both the hard-working nominated apprentices, and UHI Shetland’s aquaculture team, who are dedicated to nurturing talent, promoting excellence, and shaping the future leaders of the aquaculture industry.”
