Letters / Visionary proposal
Cllrs Armitage and McGregor should be applauded for their bold plan to examine free transport on buses and inter-island ferries.
Councillors team up to propose free public transport for all
Transport infrastructure is key to the future development of our islands. The economic benefits far outweigh the costs. The social benefits of people being able to move around the island should be unhindered by cost.
As we know inter-island ferry terminals benefit from waiting rooms together with free access to the council’s WiFi network. This combines transport and connectivity which is vital in this day and age.
I would ask all councillors to consider an amendment which adds WiFi access at bus shelters. Bus shelters are, by their nature, cold draughty places but WiFi might address this inconvenience.
It is encouraging to see the SIC finally acting as a council should do, in looking to provide facilities for the wider community.
Let us hope other councillors do the right thing and support this visionary proposal.
