RETAILERS in Shetland have been warned to be on the lookout for counterfeit banknotes currently circulating in Lerwick.

Police said shop owners have been given advice on how to check if a bank note is genuine, such as looking for a metallic thread embedded in the note, which appears as silver dashes on its back.

Chief inspector Stuart Clemenson said fake Bank of England £20 notes have appeared in Lerwick on two dates over recent weeks, including last Friday (8 July).
