Community / No Delting Up Helly Aa in 2021
THE DELTING Up Helly Aa will no longer take place in 2021 as a result of continued uncertainty over Covid-19.
The 2020 Delting festival was first postponed in March as a precaution just before a national lockdown was announced.
The committee initially hoped to host the event in October this year but that became an unrealistic option and it was postponed again to March 2021.
However, the committee said on Friday that hosting “Up Helly Aa next year is not possible at this time due to the ongoing restrictions of Covid-19.
“The committee have looked at all aspects, and with local lockdowns still ongoing across the country we feel we would not be in a position to hold our festival in March.
“The public’s health and wellbeing is our main concern, and being able to achieve Up Helly Aa to its full potential is not feasible at this time.”
Scalloway, Lerwick, Bressay, Nesting/Girlsta, Norwick, Uyeasound, Cullivoe and Northmavine have all also postponed their events to 2022.
