Community / Delting Up Helly Aa postponed until 2023
THE DELTING Up Helly Aa committee has decided to postpone the event for another year.
The committee wrote on Facebook: “It is with great regret that we inform you the decision to host Up-Hell-Aa next March has been further postponed to 2023.
“The committee held a meeting with venue staff, volunteers, chairmen & teachers on Thursday night. With several factors all leading to the decision collectively, at this time it was agreed it’s still not yet safe enough to go ahead.
“The community’s health and wellbeing is our main concern, and being able to achieve Up-Helly-Aa to its full potential is not feasible at this time sadly.
“We’ll hopefully have some more uplifting news next year, and achieve what our festival strives on when it’s safe to do so.”
The Delting Up Helly Aa last took place in 2019, with the 2020 event being pulled as the coronavirus pandemic took hold. This year no fire festivals were held in Shetland.
Most other Up Helly Aas and fire festivals have already postponed their 2022 events.
