News / Wildlife sanctuary celebration

HILLSWICK Wildlife Sanctuary is holding an event in September to celebrate its 30th anniversary and the success of its ongoing fundraising appeal.

A supper dance with the Peter Wood Band will be held at the Sound Hall in Lerwick on 1 September, with wildlife and landscape artwork due to be auctioned off too.

The sanctuary launched a fundraising appeal earlier this year after the Sullom Voe Association agreed to invest £300,000 to renovate, refurbish and upgrade the Hillswick facility if a target of 500 people pledging a fiver a month was reached.

Owners Jan and Pete Bevington now just need less than 50 people to pledge £5 to reach the goal.

“We’re hoping the supper dance will take us to the finishing line of the appeal and we can start planning the major works that will give the sanctuary the long-term future that we have been dreaming of for such a long time,” Jan said.

“It will also be a celebration of our 30th anniversary rescuing, rehabilitating and releasing seals and otters back into the wild.”

The supper dance at Sound Hall starts at 7.30pm and tickets cost £7 or £10 (including five £1 raffle tickets).

They can be purchased by contacting Jolene Leftwich on 07917 726238.
