Shetland Nature offers self-catering accommodation in a ‘wow factor location’

Shetland News readers can claim a special 15 per cent discount

Da Gaet Hus.

Fancy a long weekend or even a whole week staycation in Unst this winter and don’t know yet where to stay with the whole family?

Finding the right accommodation has just become that much easier with two new self-catering units, overlooking picturesque Westing Bay, now available for bookings.

‘Da Gaet Hüs’, comprising of two separate units, Hermaness and Hamar, sleeping five and four respectively, is a modern self-catering property with all amenities including breathtaking views.

Built in 2016 for the sisters of the Society of our Lady of the Isles (SOLI) Anglican order, the property has now been leased to Brydon Thomason of Shetland Nature.

The wildlife and photography tour operator uses the accommodation primarily for the tailored group holidays and photo-tours he and his team offer during the summer months.

It has now become available for self-catered bookings during autumn and winter.

Brydon describes Da Gaet Hüs as “premium accommodation in a wow factor location”.

Flugga is the upstairs master bedroom.

He is well aware that the ‘island above all others’ has become an increasingly popular destination for Shetlanders on staycations.

Equipped with underfloor air-soured heating the two properties are warm and comfortable

“It is a fantastic thing that so many Shetlanders stay within the isles now and there are so many amazing places to stay from high-end to quirky and cozy.

We are really keen to encourage and celebrate this and intend to have an islander discount in place during off-peak seasons,” he promises.

After almost 30 years in Fetlar, the island where Brydon grew up, the small Episcopal Church community moved to Unst in 2015.

Here the sisters would be nearer social care and their new centre was built in 2017 but sadly, due to poor health, they moved out in 2023.

Having stayed empty since, Brydon and his family took on the building earlier this year to give it a new lease of life as an accommodation venue for their tour company, Shetland Nature.

The two properties are linked by an adjoining garage plus meeting room and can be booked individually. However, internal access can be opened to accommodate larger family or group bookings as one large venue.

Equipped with underfloor air-soured heating the two properties are warm and comfortable, feature well-appointed bedrooms, Freeview TVs and WiFi.

The larger of the two properties, Hermaness, comprises of a large open plan kitchen with lounge and dining areas, two double/twin bedroom and a single bedroom downstairs.

Hamar, the slightly smaller of the two units, meanwhile offers two double bedrooms with a shared main bathroom.

More details of the two properties including additional photos and availability can be found at the Shetland Nature website here.

Shetland News readers will be able to claim an additional 15 per cent discount on all quoted prices by using the code ‘Unst Staycation’ when booking.

The properties’ short-term letting licence number is SH00573F
