Taxi driving at 54mph in built-up area of Lerwick among offences detected by visiting road police
ROAD policing officers detected a van driving at 83mph in heavy rain and high winds – and a taxi going at 54mph in Lerwick – during a recent visit to Shetland.
Officers said the speeding taxi was driving within a built-up area of Lerwick with customers as passengers.
The van was driving on roads where the national speed limit of 60mph applied.
Officers also detected a number of children not suitably restrained correctly within vehicles, and various other offences such as no insurance, load insecurity and using mobile phones whilst driving.
Inspector Donnie Mackinnon of the Highland and Islands road policing unit said: “These patrols highlight our commitment to road safety across the wider Highlands and Islands.
“Whilst the majority of road users are responsible, safe and law abiding, there are still those who pose a risk to road and community safety and we will continue to take robust action to positively influence this type of behaviour with the overarching aim of reducing casualties.”
