News / Golds for Christine & Felix on day two
CYCLIST Christine McLean bagged Team Shetland’s first gold medal of the NatWest Island Games in Gotland on Monday morning – followed by gold and silver medals for swimmer Felix Gifford later on day two.
Christine recorded a time of 57:01.33 – 22 seconds ahead of second-placed Karina Bowie of Guernsey – in the women’s individual time trial.
Her team-mates June Porter, Lynsey Henderson and Megan McLean finished 20th, 23rd and 24th respectively in a field of 34 cyclists.
The teatime final of the men’s 200m butterfly race saw Felix record a time of 2:04.16. That placed him almost two seconds ahead of third-placed Guernsey swimmer Ben Lowndes and just under three seconds behind Faroese gold medallist Oli Mortensen.
Less than an hour later Felix went one better, a time of 2:04.52 in the 200m individual medley placing him 0.01 of a second ahead of Faroe’s Alvi Hjelm.
The medal successes took Shetland’s overall tally to four following Sunday’s bronze medal for the women’s triathlon team.
Over on the athletics track, meanwhile, Faye Cox missed out on a medal by just one tenth of a second in the women’s 100 metres. Her time of 12.78 seconds earned her fourth place, narrowly behind Orkney’s Taylah Spence in a time of 12.68 seconds.
In the shot put, Team Shetland’s Connor McDonald threw a distance of 12.13 metres to finish a very creditable fifth out of 10 competitors.
Meanwhile, the footballers lost out 3-0 to group favourites Guernsey – who they famously defeated to clinch the gold medal on home soil back in 2005 –at Stenkyrka on Monday evening.
