News / Boxing club hopes
A MEETING is being held later this week to gauge if there is enough interest in Shetland to form a boxing club.
The event is taking place in the radio room of Lerwick’s Islesburgh Community Centre on Thursday (17 November) between 7pm and 8.30pm.
Local enthusiast Adam Tait, who holds training sessions every week in Lerwick, is keen to form a club to take the sport forward in Shetland.
He said he has trained hundreds of locals, but there is no possibility of competitive matches being held in the isles if people don’t come forward to form a club.
“We need people to come to this meeting on Thursday to see if we can get anybody to volunteer and help set it up,” Tait said.
“We can’t start a club without a committee and volunteers and nobody can box competitively without being affiliated to Boxing Scotland. You also can’t hold an event without Boxing Scotland.”
Tait said if the required numbers don’t attend the public meeting, then he will continue to hold his own boxing classes, which are held at the Clickimin Leisure Complex.
He added that interest in boxing in Shetland varies depending on the time of the year, as well as what’s happening in the media.
However, Tait said amateur boxers in the isles are stunted, as they don’t get opportunities to show off their development.
“You get your core group but even they drop off eventually as they can’t progress,” he said.
“They can’t show people their craft that they’ve put all that work in to. I want that to stop and give these young boxers a home where the community can come together.”
