News / Court round-up
A MAN from Brae has been banned from the road for two years and fined nearly £1,000 after admitting a number of driving offences.
Richard Johnson, of Grindwell Road, drove with an expired licence and no insurance on the A970 at Lerwick’s North Lochside on 3 September last year.
The 39 year old also used a van without holding a licence or having insurance on Lerwick’s St Magnus Street on 13 December, while he also was in possession of a Stanley knife in public without reasonable excuse, at the same location on the same date.
Procurator fiscal Duncan Mackenzie told Lerwick Sheriff Court on Thursday the that knife was spotted in open view by the police in a compartment in the man’s van after they had stopped him.
In mitigation, defence agent Tommy Allan said his client had been working on his father’s croft in Yell and forgot to leave the knife behind before rushing to the ferry.
A MAN from Cunningsburgh who fraudulently obtained over £8,500 in disability living allowance has been placed under supervision for one year.
Michael Wiles, of Aithsetter, previously admitted failing to report a change in circumstances on or between 15 May 2008 and 7 August 2012 at his home or elsewhere.
Lerwick Sheriff Court heard on Wednesday that the total sum of £8,530.85 had been paid off after the 61 year old sold his house.
