News / Islands housing fund
THE SCOTTISH government has confirmed a new £5 million islands housing fund, a measure that Northern Isles MSPs Tavish Scott and Liam McArthur had been calling for.
The money will be spread over three years and will be in addition to a £25 million fund for rural housing.
It is estimated that the fund could be used to build 100 new affordable houses in island communities.
Housing minister Kevin Stewart said: “Our new £5 million islands housing fund will increase the supply of good quality affordable housing which is an essential part of attracting and retaining people in our islands.
“Our islands housing fund demonstrates our strong and continued support for our islands, with the forthcoming islands bill set to provide lasting benefits for these communities for generations to come.”
Welcoming the announcement, Liberal Democrat MSP Scott added: “There is huge pressure on affordable housing in Shetland and this announcement comes as welcome news.
“I am pleased that the Scottish Government have taken this idea forwards.
“However, boosting housing stock in the isles will not come cheap. People will want to be assured that this is more than a PR exercise. The minister made all the right noises today but make no mistake, he will be held to account for his words.”
