News / Man admits stealing money from several Mossbank cars

A MAN has been remanded in custody after admitting to stealing various items from a succession of cars shortly after moving into the Mossbank area of Shetland.

Thirty six year old Wesley Bailey, of Leaside, pleaded guilty to three counts of stealing on 15 and 16 July.

He took a camera and over £100 from an unsecured vehicle at Hamarsgarth before stealing around £6 in loose change from a vehicle at Rayburn Road.

Procurator fiscal Keith Adam said Bailey had also smashed the front rearside window of a locked vehicle at Maidenfield. The incident took place at around 5.30am and set the car’s alarm off.

Bailey also admitted failing to attend a court appearance having slept through his alarm. As a result he had spent a night in custody.

Defence agent Tommy Allan said his client was released from jail at the end of June but a portion of his sentence does not expire until next week.

Bailey had just moved into the Mossbank area when he attended a party, and feels that his drink must have been spiked with legal highs.

That resulted in him having no recollection of the incidents, but he did make a “glib confession” on social media.

Allan said his client was keen to pursue any alternative to custody.

Honorary sheriff Malcolm Bell deferred sentence until 14 September but remanded Bailey in custody because there was a “serious chance” he would reoffend and a possibility that he would fail to appear.
