News / Hall gets new paint job thanks to offenders’ unpaid work
THE INTERIOR of the Whiteness and Weisdale has recently been repainted by the community payback unpaid work team – contributing to an overall refurfishment of the building in its fortieth year.
The hall committee said they were pleased with the work, which has seen the main hall, bar area, toilets, stage and ceiling completely repainted and the tiles re-grouted.
Exterior painting was also included and criminals sentenced to carry out unpaid work have put in more than 1,300 hours since work began last November.
Hall committee member Shona Slater said: “The Whiteness and Weisdale Hall has served the local community well for many years and we were keen to revamp the building for our fortieth anniversary.
“We’re very pleased with the end result delivered by the community payback team and the standard of the work is excellent.”
SIC convener Malcolm Bell, a representative on the northern criminal justice authority, said it was a good example of community payback orders providing a public benefit.
“Most importantly, we obviously also hope that this direct alternative to prison will also bring benefit by reducing reoffending,” he added.
